Woman charged in $1.2M embezzlement

bostonherald.com | 2/7/09 | $1.2 million | suspect: Tracy Sutley | victim: Weir Power & Valves and Controls

Prosecutors say a Lynn woman stole over $1.2 million from her employer and spent the cash on European vacations, an in-ground pool and designer clothing.

Tracy Sutley was arraigned Thursday in Salem Superior Court and charged with larceny and forgery. The 39-year-old accountant pleaded not guilty and is being held on $250,000 cash bail.

Karen Buxton, a prosecutor from Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office, said Sutley embezzled money over a five-year period from Weir Power & Valves and Controls in Ipswich.

The company specializes in pump equipment for nuclear power, fossil fuel, renewable energy and industrial activities. It employs 9,000 people worldwide.

Investigators say company officials were tipped off to the alleged scheme when they noticed Sutley charged $436 on a corporate American Express card for a Salem hotel. When the charge was detected, Sutley offered to reimburse the firm and never returned to work, prosecutors said.
